Purcell - Two in One Upon a Ground - Bass Viol & Keyboard

The haunting canonic melody is played by the viol and echoed by the keyboard over a descending "ground" bassline.  From Purcell's tragicomic semi-opera The Prophetess, or The History of Dilclesian (London, 1690).

Most versions are for two like instruments in canon.  This is a true duo for viola da gamba and keyboard (harpsichord or organ).

Gaspar Sanz - Canarios - Bass Viol (Intermediate)

Originally composed for guitar, this lively 6/8-time Spanish piece was inspired by indigenous dance of the Canary Islands.  Gaspar Sanz (c.1640-1710) was a guitarist, composer, and priest who first published this in Instruccion de Musica (Livre 1), 1674.

Two clefs are provided:  Treble-8 and Alto.  For an upper-intermediate bass viol (viola da gamba) player, there are a few optional double stops and a bit of very fun left-hand plucking of open strings!

J. S. Bach – "Arioso" – Bass Viol (Advanced)

Here, Bach hands us a lesson in Baroque ornamentation by embellishing his own melody (the well-known "Arioso" from BWV 156).  In his later work, BWV 1056, Bach created a highly decorated version of the same melody.  This arrangement for advanced bass viol (viola da gamba) combines the original and ornamented melodies accompanied by keyboard (organ, harpsichord, or possibly lute).

For intermediate players, we also offer an edition of this beloved melody without the hard parts!  Click Here for the intermediate version.

J. S. Bach – "Arioso" – Bass Viol (Intermediate)

Bach never actually called this tune "Arioso" (see the preface of our edition).  This chestnut of baroque music has been arranged for virtually every other instrument.  Now, FINALLY, we have it for viola da gamba with keyboard (organ, harpsichord, or possibly lute).

This version is the well-known Adagio from BWV 156.  For advanced players, we also offer an edition of the highly ornamented version from BWV 1056.  Click Here for the advanced version.
